This is the wrong question.
You don't pick between cold email and LinkedIn. You use both. They're better together. But the sequence, timing, and messaging matter.
| Metric | Cold Email | LinkedIn Outreach |
|---|---|---|
| Open Rate | 35–45% (if good domain) | 20–30% (connection request viewed) |
| Reply Rate | 2–8% (depends on sequence) | 1–3% (depends on connection acceptance) |
| Cost Per Lead | $0.01–$0.10 (just email) | $0.05–$0.50 (account needed, slower) |
| Speed to Conversation | 3–14 days | 7–21 days (wait for connection first) |
| Feel Factor | "Professional" (can feel cold) | "Social" (can feel weird coming from nobody) |
| Scale Ceiling | 5,000+ per week without issues | 50–100 per week (LinkedIn limits) |
The winner: Cold email wins on volume, cost, and speed. LinkedIn wins on... connection feeling, which matters only if you use it right.
You should use ONLY cold email if:
You should use ONLY LinkedIn if:
Here's the winning playbook:
Send a simple connection request with a note:
"Hi [name], I follow your work in [industry]. Wanted to connect."
Why first: LinkedIn shows "pending" connections. When your email lands 2–3 days later, they've already seen your face and name. They're primed.
Now they're expecting it (subconsciously). Send the real email with actual value:
"Hi [name], Saw your post about [topic]. Thought this might interest you: [link/insight]."
Why this order: Email open rate jumps 15–20% when they already recognize your name from LinkedIn.
If they accepted the connection, send a direct message:
"Thanks for connecting! Saw you're working on [thing]. We helped someone similar with [result]. Worth a quick chat?"
Why a message: Direct messages on LinkedIn have 5–8x higher read rates than emails from strangers. You're no longer a stranger — you're a connection.
Back to email with your second outreach:
"Hey [name], pattern we're seeing with [type of company]: they're struggling with [specific problem]. Curious if that's on your radar."
Why both channels: Some people respond to email. Some check LinkedIn daily. Hitting both channels means you're not relying on one inbox they might ignore.
Cold Email Alone: 2–5% reply rate
LinkedIn Alone: 1–3% reply rate
Cold Email + LinkedIn Hybrid: 5–12% reply rate
Why? Because you're using both channels to confirm rather than convince. By the time they see your email, they've already decided you might be worth listening to.

Neither cold email nor LinkedIn is magic. Both require:
Use both. Use them in the right order. And watch your reply rate double.
